Hello, my name is Diane Szwajkowski. Thank you for taking the time to read about me and my practice.

I am a Certified Doulagivers Specialist. The name of my practice is Doula Di Ann LLC. My Mother’s name was Ann and it is in her honor I created this practice.

Thank you and I love you. These were the words my Mother began saying in the last few months of her life. At the age of 78 my Mother; Ann was diagnosed with stage 4 bladder cancer. Three years before, she had experienced a right brain stroke. I was given an incredible gift and this was to be my Mother’s caregiver in the final months of her life.

When the doctor gave my Mother the news of her diagnosis, she asked, how long she had. The doctor said “Ann, I cannot give you an answer, and I would say perhaps 6 months. Mother asked if she should get her affairs in order, the Doctor said to her Ann, everyone should have their affair in order.

My Father had died 6 years prior. Both of my parents had theirs affairs in order and when my Mother died I was able to follow all of her wishes. I feel blessed and grateful for this gift my parents gave us. It is my hope that I can give my only son the same gift my parents gave me. To have my final wishes in order, to have open conversations about my life and my death. Life is short and if we have those hard conversations about our death early on, then in our final days we can spend being together sharing and being present.

I was the Executrix to my Mother’s estate which was a long and time consuming process. I learned so much as I was making my way through my grief journey and having to deal with my Mothers final wishes.

As my parents health began to decline years before. I began doing research in the death and dying field. I learned a tremendous amount and had lots of hands on experience. It was a privilege to care for my Mother. She brought me into this world and cared for me it was my turn to give back to her. We had many good laughs and cries together. Mother and I had many good conversations about her life and her final wishes. I am so grateful I sat and listened to her stories.

After my Mother’s death I felt called to learn more. So I went back to school. I attended the Doulagivers Institute and became an End of Life Doula Specialist. Doulagivers is the New Specialized Area of Non-Medical Health Care for the Elderly. Doula is a Greek word meaning non-medical person who gives physical, emotional, and spiritual support to someone else. Giver means someone who gives a Doulagivers® Specialist plans and coordinates the care of the elderly to improve their quality of life on a daily basis and to maintain their independence.

The Doulagivers® Specialist also establishes a trusted relationship to be able to be present and support both the patient and family during the End of Life process.

By working with seniors, helping them plan their wishes, and being a trusted companion for them as they reach the End of Life, the Doulagivers® Specialist is able to care for the elderly, help with all end of life paperwork and plans, and be there to care for the client as an End-Of-Life Doula.

It is my hope that I can give my only son the same gift my parents gave me. To have my final wishes in order, to have open conversations about my life and my death. Life is short and if we have those hard conversations about our death early on, then in our final days we can spend being together sharing being present.

My brother and my sister have both died young and I am the only remaining family member in my family in origin. It gives me a greater appreciation for each day and my own life. My desire as a Doula is to help educate, support, guide and listen to you and your family. Let’s plan and get those hard decisions made so you can get on and enjoy your life. Each day is a gift, let’s live for the now and enjoy the time we have.
